Thriving in the Water: How Ear Plugs, Outdoor Swimming, Tinted Goggles, and Medication Enhance My Performance as an Autistic ADHD Swimmer

Hello everyone!

Today, I want to share my unique journey as an autistic ADHD swimmer and how a combination of ear plugs, outdoor swimming, tinted goggles, and medication has significantly boosted my performance and enjoyment in the sport.

Discovering My Love for Swimming

Swimming has always been more than just a sport for me; it's a sanctuary where I find peace and focus. The rhythmic movement through the water brings a sense of calm that's hard to replicate elsewhere. However, being autistic and having ADHD comes with its own set of challenges. Sensory sensitivities and concentration difficulties can make swimming a complex experience. But with the right tools and strategies, I've turned these challenges into strengths.

The Comfort of Ear Plugs

One of the biggest challenges for autistic individuals can be managing sensory overload. The constant noise in a swimming pool, from splashing water to loud echoes, can be overwhelming. Ear plugs have been a lifesaver for me, significantly reducing background noise and allowing me to concentrate on my strokes and breathing. This sensory management tool creates a more controlled and peaceful environment, making my training sessions more productive and enjoyable.

The Serenity of Outdoor Swimming

Indoor pools can sometimes feel claustrophobic and overstimulating due to artificial lighting and echoing sounds. Outdoor swimming offers a refreshing alternative. The natural light, open space, and fresh air provide a calming environment that helps reduce sensory overload. Swimming in natural bodies of water or outdoor pools has not only improved my mood but also enhanced my connection with nature, making each session feel like a mini-retreat.

Clarity with Tinted Goggles

Bright lights and reflections off the water can be distracting and uncomfortable. Tinted goggles have made a significant difference by reducing glare and providing a clearer, more soothing visual experience. They help me maintain focus on my technique and surroundings without being overwhelmed by bright or changing light conditions. With tinted goggles, I can swim confidently and comfortably, whether it's sunny or overcast.

The Focus from Medication

Living with ADHD means my mind is often a whirlwind of thoughts and impulses. Medication has provided me with the mental clarity and focus needed to excel as a swimmer. It helps regulate my attention, reduces impulsivity, and enhances my ability to follow a training plan. On medication, I find it easier to concentrate on the technical aspects of swimming, maintain proper form, and pace myself correctly. This mental focus is crucial for making the most out of each practice session and achieving my athletic goals.

Finding Balance and Embracing My Strengths

Combining these tools—ear plugs, outdoor swimming, tinted goggles, and medication—has created a holistic approach that supports my unique needs. Swimming offers a structured routine that benefits both my autism and ADHD. The repetitive strokes and sensory input from the water provide a therapeutic experience that helps me stay grounded and centered.

Being part of a supportive swimming community has also been invaluable. Communicating my needs with coaches and teammates ensures they understand how to support me effectively, enriching my social interactions and boosting my self-confidence.

Encouragement for Fellow Athletes

To my fellow autistic and ADHD athletes, I encourage you to explore various tools and strategies that can enhance your performance and enjoyment in your sport. Whether it's sensory aids like ear plugs and tinted goggles, or finding the right medication and environment, discovering what works best for you can make a significant difference.

Swimming has taught me resilience, discipline, and the importance of self-care. With the right support and a positive mindset, we can overcome any hurdle and achieve our athletic dreams.

Keep swimming strong and embracing your unique journey!
